The Canisius baseball team finished off a weekend sweep of East Tennessee State, the defending Atlantic Sun champion, with a 13-6 win on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins win their fourth straight and improve to 6-3 on the season.
Canisius had 19 hits on the day, including four home runs, with seven Golden Griffins having multi-hit games. Senior Jose Torralba was 3-for-5 with two runs scored while senior Shane Zimmer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and his first homer of the season. Senior Jimmy Luppens went 2-for-3 with two RBI and his second homer of the season while freshman Christ Conley was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and his first collegiate home run. Sophomore Brett Siddall was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run.
Junior Devon Stewart had his second straight impressive start to improve to 2-1 on the season. Stewart went six innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out two and throwing only 72 pitches. Senior Mike Tolsma and junior Brandon Bielecki each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
The Griffs got on the board in the second as junior Connor Panas reached on a one-out double and scored on the next pitch, a double from Torralba. Zimmer followed with a two-run homer to center. The Griffs scored two more runs in the third, getting the two-run homer from Luppens. Conley led off the fourth with a homer to left to put the Griffs up 6-0.
After two more runs in the sixth, Canisius put the game away with five runs in the seventh. Torralba led off with a ground-rule double and scored on an RBI single from Zimmer. After back-to-back strikeouts, a two-out single from junior Mike Krische set up a three-run home run from Siddall. Sophomore Anthony Massicci added an RBI triple to close out the Griffs' scoring later in the inning.
Canisius returns to the field next weekend for a four-game series at Norfolk State. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
