The Canisius baseball team lost both of its games on the second day of the Flyer Classic. The Golden Griffins lost 9-4 to Dayton and then lost 7-4 to Miami, to fall to 10-6 on the season.
Dayton 9, Canisius 4
The Griffs tied the score at 1-1 in the third when senior Jesse Kelso led off with a bunt single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Anthony Massicci. Canisius took its only lead of the game in the fifth as walks to senior Ryan Coppinger and junior Jesse Puscheck along with a hit by pitch to senior Jimmy Luppens loaded the bases. Sophomore Brett Siddall had an RBI single and an RBI groundout from junior Connor Panas made it 3-1.
Dayton (4-12) would score eight straight runs to take control of the game and hand junior Rohn Pierce his first loss of the season. Pierce allowed six runs, five earned, in seven hits on eight hits to fall to 3-1 on the season.
Siddall was 2-for-5 while Kelso went 2-for-3 with a walk and Puscheck was 2-for-4 with a walk.
Miami 7, Canisius 4
Canisius got on the board in the bottom of the second as Coppinger drew a one-out walk and scored on a two-out, RBI single from Massicci. Miami claimed the lead with two runs in the top of the third, but the Griffs went back in front with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Ronnie Bernick led off with a single and eventually scored on a one-out RBI single from senior Jose Torralba, who later scored on an RBI single from Siddall to put the Griffs up 3-2.
Miami (7-9) scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. The Griffs mounted their best rally in the eighth, starting with a leadoff walk to Bernick, who again scored on a one-out RBI single from Torralba to make it a one-run game. Puscheck followed with a single and Luppens was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. Wynston McMartin got freshman Jake Lumley to line out on the first pitch to end the threat. The Redhawks added two insurance runs in the ninth.
Sophomore Alex Godzak (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, and walking six in 6.2 innings.
Puscheck and Siddall had two more hits for the Griffs while Torralba, Panas and Lumley also posted multi-hit games for Canisius.
Canisius concludes play in the Flyer Classic against the University of Dayton on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
