Junior Connor Panas (Toronto, Ontario) was named the MAAC Player of the Week on Tuesday. Panas wins the award for the second time this year from the conference office.
Panas went 8-for-11 with three home runs and 10 RBI as Canisius extended its season-long winning streak to nine games and moved into first place in the MAAC standings. Panas matched his career-high with four hits and set a career high with four RBI in the 5-0 win in the series opener. The junior then hit what proved to be the game-winning homer with a two-run shot in the sixth inning of a 4-2 win in the middle game. Panas hit two homers in the series finale, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and again driving in four runs.
Panas was also named the MAAC Player of the Week on March 25. He joins teammate Jimmy Luppens as the only two players in the league to be named MAAC Player of the Week twice this season.
The Canisius baseball team has now won eight weekly awards from the MAAC, the highest total in the conference as no other school has claimed more than four awards in 2014.
On Monday, Panas earned Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors, becoming the second Golden Griffin to earn the distinction this season. Junior Rohn Pierce received the honor after the first weekend of the season.
Canisius (31-14, 14-4 MAAC), having already clinched a spot in the six-team MAAC Championship (May 21-25 in Lakewood, N.J.), returns to the field for a three-game series at rival Niagara University this weekend.
