Tracking the Griffs In Professional Baseball

A number of former Golden Griffins are playing professional baseball after their careers at Canisius. Here is an update as of July 7:

John Axford • Cleveland Indians

Axford has appeared in 39 games for the Indians, posting a 2-3 record with a 3.63 ERA and nine saves. Axford has 41 strikeouts in 34.2 innings for Cleveland in his first year in the American League.

Sean Jamieson • Mobile BayBears (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Jamieson has a .294 batting average in 85 games, to go along with 51 runs scored, 16 doubles and 30 RBI for the Mobile BayBears - the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jamieson hit .345 in the month of June and was a Midseason All-Star in the Southern League. He went 1-for-2 with an RBI for the South Division All-Stars.

Steve McQuail • Visalia Rawhide (Arizona Diamondbacks)

McQuail was called up to the Visalia Rawhide in June, the high-level Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. McQuail has appeared in 23 games for the Rawhide and has a .233 batting average. He previously played for the South Bend Silver Hawks and hit .304 with six home runs and 20 RBI in 29 games. McQuail was named an All-Star in the Midwest League, just after being called up to Visalia.

Garrett Cortright • Delmarva Shorebirds (Baltimore Orioles)

Cortright was called up at the start of July to Delmarva after starting the year at Aberdeen. Cortright had a 0.93 ERA in 9.2 innings for Aberdeen before being called up the Shorebirds. The 40th-round pick of the Orioles in 2013, Cortright has a 3.00 ERA in three innings with Delmarva in the Class-A South Atlantic League. 

Jon Fitzsimmons • Idaho Falls Chukars (Kansas City Royals)

Fitzsimmons has appeared in four games for the Chukars. Fitzsimmons has a 1.23 earned run average to go along with eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings in the Rookie Pioneer League.

Rohn Pierce • Pulaski Mariners (Seattle Mariners)

Pierce has appeared in five games at Pulaski and has a 1-0 record to go along with a 5.06 earned run average. The 19th-round pick of Seattle in this past June's Major League Baseball Draft, Pierce has 11 strikeouts in his 10.2 innings pitched in the Rookie Appalachian League.

Kevin Mahoney • Amarillo Sox

Mahoney has appeared in 43 games for the Amarillo Sox, a member of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. Mahoney, who missed the majority of the 2013 season with an elbow injury, is hitting .263 with 18 RBI and 16 runs scored on the season.

Ryan Fennell • New Jersey Jackals

Fennell has appeared in 12 games for the New Jersey Jackals, a member of the Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball. Fennell has a 2.21 ERA in 20.1 innings to go along with 21 strikeouts.
