John McCarthy, Class of 1956- Men's Basketball & Baseball

  • Three-year letterwinner for the basketball team
  • When his career ended, he ranked first in career scoring (1,160) and second in rebounding (457)
  • Queen City Invitational MVP during his junior season and led the team in scoring with 21.3 points in three NCAA Tournament games
  • He was named captain as a senior, made the Queen City All-Tournament team and led the team in scoring with 514 points
  • At the time he was inducted, his career average of 19 points per game was fifth all-time
  • He went on to play professionally with the Rochester Royals (1956-57), Cincinnati (1958-59), St. Louis Hawks (1959-62), and the Boston Celtics (1963-64) where he won an NBA Championship
  • Was hired to coach the Golden Griffins in 1974, and led Canisius to an overall record of 28-49 during his three years as head coach
  • Also played baseball while attending Canisius
  • Tenth former men's basketball player inducted in the Hall of Fame
