The 2009-2010 Golden Griffin hockey season has come to an end with a loss in the conference semifinals to the eventual Atlantic Hockey Champion RIT Tigers. We lost on Friday night, in a tough one. Ultimately the game was decided on the power-play. RIT converted on a few of their chances, while we ran into a hot RIT goaltender, who made some big saves at key points during the game.
It was exciting these past few weeks, with a big playoff win and a trip to Rochester for the conference tournament. We got to Rochester on Thursday afternoon, where we practiced at the Blue Cross Arena. After practice, the boys threw their suits on and we headed to the Atlantic Hockey Awards Banquet. A few Griffs picked up some awards. Cory Conacher was recognized for his career year, picking up several awards; including Player of the Year, Top Scorer, and a first-team all-conference selection, while defenseman Carl Hudson was named to the all- conference second team and forward Vinnie Scarsella picked up a selection to the all-conference third team. It was a relaxing evening before the day of the big game. With the loss in the afternoon, we headed back to Buffalo on Friday night.
With the disappointing loss, the season is over and now there are six long months before the start of the 2010-2011 season. For some of the seniors, their hockey seasons are not over. Some of the seniors will leave and go play pro-hockey around the country. In the coming days those seniors will find out where they are going. There will be updates to come on gogriffs.com.
For the rest of the school year - we will get a week or two to let our bodies recover from the playoff run. Then grueling offseason workouts resume until school is over in May. We will spend hours running, working-out and shooting pucks, in preparation for next season which will hopefully have a better ending than this year.
It is tough writing the last chronicle of the year, because unfortunately, a great group of seniors is leaving. This group of Dave Cianfrini, Josh Heidinger, Carl Hudson, Andrew Loewen, Vincent Amigone, Ryan Klusendorf, Peter MacDougall and Jason Weeks did tremendous things for the program on and off the ice. We wish nothing but the best for these guys. Some will continue to play for many years, while others will go back home and put their degrees to good use from Canisius, which in the end is why we came to Buffalo.
Well folks, all good things must come to an end and with a few thank yous, the 2009-2010 chronicle will come to an end. Thanks to our head trainer Koki Takano and all his assistants, our equipment manager Sean Schmidt, and all those people around campus who help out the program. Thanks to all of the fans who came out and supported us this year, including; family, friends, and students. I'm sorry I can't thank everyone, but the boys will have a great offseason and will be ready to start on a new championship run come October. To all the readers out there, take care and always remember keep your stick on the ice.
