Former Canisius men’s basketball player Isaac Sosa is one of 700 student-athletes from 287 colleges and universities to be named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, it was announced today. The NABC Honors Court recognizes college basketball student-athletes from all levels of the collegiate game for their work in the classroom during the 2012-13 season.

For Sosa, who graduated from Canisius in finance in May, this is his third national academic honor, as he was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District I Men’s Basketball Team and the I-AAA Athletic Directors’ Association Scholar-Athlete Team. The Guaynabo, Puerto Rico native was named to the 2012-13 MAAC All-Academic Team and he also earned Conference USA All-Academic Team accolades three times during his playing career at Central Florida.

Sosa finished the 2012-13 season ranked third on the team with his 11.6 points per game, and his 95 makes from 3-point land set a new school single-season record. He ranked second in the MAAC and 28th in the nation with 2.8 3-point field goals per contest and his 40.9 percent effort from long range ranked first in the conference and 32nd in the country. He scored a season-high 25 points in Canisius’ 64-60 win at home over Manhattan Jan. 17, and he knocked down a career-best eight 3-pointers in the Golden Griffins’ 82-54 victory over Longwood in the Koessler Athletic Center Dec. 17. He was the only player on Canisius’ roster to start in all 34 games last season, as the Blue and Gold went 20-14 overall and earned a berth into the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, the program’s first postseason bid since 1996.

Sosa is one of three players from the MAAC to receive this honor from the NABC, joining with Siena players O.D. Anosike and Davis Martens. In order to be named to the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically and a varsity player, he must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher and he must be a member of an NCAA Division I, II, II or NAIA Division I or II institution.

Sosa is currently playing professionally in his native Puerto Rico for Mayaguez where he is averaging 5.6 points per game while shooting a team-best 38.8 percent from 3-point land.
