QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius women’s basketball team returns home for its first games of 2014, hosting Iona College on Friday night in the Koessler Athletic Center. 
  • Canisius and Iona are meeting for the 50th time, with Iona leading the all-time series 26-23.
  • Iona has won the last four meetings between the teams, including all three games last year. The Gaels eliminated Canisius in th quarterfinals of the 2013 MAAC Championship with a 76-58 win in Springfield, Mass.
  • Canisius last defeated the Gaels 85-74 on Jan. 9, 2012, in overtime in the KAC on Kid’s Day.
  • The 2013-14 season is the 25th year that the Golden Griffins have played in the MAAC.
  • Senior Jamie Ruttle was named to the preseason All-MAAC Third Team. It is the third time in Ruttle’s career that she has been selected to a preseason All-MAAC Team.
  • Canisius was picked to finish sixth of 11 teams in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. 

NOTING THE GRIFFS

  • As of Jan. 1, Canisius is 11th in the country in assisted basket percentage (68.8), which is also the highest percentage in the MAAC.
  • Canisius has shot 40 percent or better in six games this season. The Griffs shot 40 percent or better five times in 31 games during the entire 2012-13 season.
  • In the Sunday’s game at Manhattan, senior Jamie Ruttle became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Ruttle has scored in double figures a team-best nine times this season and 53 times in her career.
  • Senior Jen Morabito Morabito ranks sixth in program history in career 3-pointers (180) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (37.5). Morabito has missed the last two games with a hand injury, ending a streak of 98 consecutive games played by the Binghamton, N.Y. native.
  • Senior Jen Lennox is third in the program’s Division I history with 92 blocks and has four blocks in the last two games.
  • Junior Kayla Hoohuli, has taken nine charges in the last nine games and 36 charges in her career. Hoohuli is the only player in the MAAC to make a 3-pointer in each game this season.

IONA SCOUT

  • Iona comes to Western New York with a 9-2 overall record and 2-0 record in the MAAC. The Gaels have won their last eight games.
  • Iona has wins over Siena and Saint Peter’s to start conference play.
  • Damika Martinez ranks in the top five nationally in scoring, averaging 26.1 points per game. The MAAC’s Preseason Player of the Year set the program record with 42 points against Columbia on Dec. 9.
  • Sophomore Joy Adams is averaging 17.7 points per game and ranks in the top five nationally at 13.3 rebounds per game.
  • Sabrina Jeridore leads the MAAC with and ranks in the top five nationally with 51 blocks.
  • Iona is second in the MAAC at 7.5 3-pointers per game and is making 38.6 percent of its 3-point field goal attempts.
  • Iona ranks second in the MAAC at 72.6 points per game. The Gaels are first in the MAAC in field goal percentage defense at 37.4 percent. Iona has a 29.6 offensive rebounding percentage, 66.9 defensive rebounding percentage and 21.7 turnover percentage. The Gaels are turning the ball over 16.1 times per contest while forcing 12.5 turnovers per game.
  • Billi Godsey is in her first season as coach of Iona. The 2003 graduate of Hofstra after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech.
