BATTING PRACTICE

  • Canisius plays its final road games of the 2014 regular season with a three-game series at rival Niagara University this weekend.
  • The Golden Griffins enter the weekend on a nine-game winning streak, their longest winning streak of the season. Canisius has had a winning streak of eight or more games three times in 2014.
  • Entering the weekend, the nine-game winning streak is the fourth-longest active streak in the country.
  • Canisius has a 14-4 record in MAAC play, and the Golden Griffins start the weekend in first place in the conference standings.
  • Canisius is the first team to clinch a spot in the 2014 MAAC Championship, qualifying for the eighth straight year - the longest streak in the conference.
  • The top six teams will qualify for the 2014 MAAC Championships, to be held May 21-25, in Lakewood, N.J. The top two teams will receive a first-round bye.
  • Canisius needs four wins in its final six conference games (or three wins and one loss by Quinnipiac and Fairfield) to guarantee a spot in the top two of the league standings and  linch a first-round bye.
  • Canisius has 19 road wins, which is tied for the most in the country at the start of the week. The Griffs have won their last eight road games, the third-longest road winning streak in the country.
  • Canisius started the week ranked No. 85 in the official NCAA RPI. In the last three weeks, Canisius has moved from No. 163 to No. 85.
  • Junior Connor Panas was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the second player on the team (joining junior Rohn Pierce) to win the award this season.
  • Panas also was named the MAAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, for the second time this season. Canisius has won eight weekly awards from the conference office, twice as many as any other team in the MAAC in 2014.
  • Panas and Pierce were named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team last week. They are now eligible to be named an Academic All-American, which will be announced at the end of May.
  • Since the start of the 2008 season Canisius has 248 wins, which is the highest total in the Northeast as the Griffs lead Connecticut (245).
  • Canisius is the only team in the Northeast to have 33 or more wins in five of the last six seasons.

RACKING UP THE ROAD WINS

  • Canisius has won 19 road games this season, including eight straight road games away from the Demske Sports Complex.
  • At the start of the week, the 19 road wins tied for the most in the country. Canisius was tied with Seton Hall and Louisiana Lafayette.
  • The eight-game road winning streak is currently the third-longest streak in the country.

SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES

  • Niagara enters the weekend with a 16-27 overall record and 8-11 record in conference play. The Purple Eagles are currently in sixth place in the MAAC standings. Niagara is playing its final MAAC series of the season and is fighting for a spot in the six-time MAAC Championship.
