Softball Goes 1-1 On First Day in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Canisius softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the three-day First Pitch Classic, hosted by Charlotte in North Carolina. The Golden Griffins started the day with a 6-4 win over Bowling Green before falling to St. Bonaventure by a 3-2. Canisius is now 3-3 on the year.

Canisius led Bowling Green (4-1) byt the score of 2-0 through three innings, but the Falcons scored three times in the top-half of the fifth to take a 3-2 advantage. In the home-half of the fifth, the Griffs answered with three runs, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of freshman Cassie Ho, that put Canisius back up 5-2. In the sixth, freshman Sydney Kreimann led off the frame with her first career homer, a solo shot that added an insurance tally on the board to put the Blue and Gold up 6-3.

Junior Madi Weathers earned her first win in the circle this year for Canisius after she went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while fanning two. Sophomore Lauren Castro came on in relief and ended up earning her first career save.

In the second game of the day, St. Bonaventure (1-0) scored twice in the top-half of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead, but Canisius answered in the home-half of that frame with two runs to knot the score at 2-2. In that inning, freshman Ashley Barnett ripped her first collegiate homer, a two-run shot to the gap in left-center that plated senior Samantha Sharkey. However, St. Bonaventure scored a run in the top of the seventh to score the 3-2 victory.

Canisius sophomore Denver Keller had two hits in the losing effort for the Griffs, who racked up five hits for the game. Junior Erika Mackie took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year after she allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.

Game Notes
• Canisius, which lost to Bowling Green at the CSU Dome Invite Feb. 12, evened the all-time series with Falcons at 2-2.

• The Griffs have won four of the last six meetings with St. Bonaventure, but the Bonnies have taken the last two contests.

Canisius will play host Charlotte Feb. 18 on the second day of the First Pitch Classic. The Griffs and the 49ers are set to meet at 12:15 p.m.
