The Canisius softball team closed out its weekend stay down south with a pair of losses on Saturday. The Golden Griffins started the day with an 8-1 loss to Dayton on the second day of the Upstate Classic before falling to host USC Upstate by a 4-0 count in the nightcap. Canisius is now 6-7 on the year.

In the first game, Dayton (8-4) took a 4-0 lead after scoring four times in the home half of the second, but Canisius tallied a run in the top of the third to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Flyers heading into the home-half of the third.

In the Griffs’ half of the third, Canisius had two runners on with two outs before sophomore Denver Keller roped a single to center that pushed senior Samantha Sharkey across the plate. The Flyers, however, took control of the game in the fourth, scoring three times to stretch the lead to 7-1. Dayton scored a single-run in the fifth on a wild pitch to make the score 8-1.

Canisius pounded out nine hits in the loss, with Keller and Sharkey each having two base-knocks for the Blue and Gold. Senior Lindsey Siler went 2-for-3 with a double for Canisius as well. Junior Madi Weathers took the loss in the circle after she allowed seven runs, all earned, on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.

In the second game, the host USC Upstate Spartans scored twice in the third and two more times in the fifth to score a 4-0 win over Canisius. The win improves USC Upstate to 19-3 on the year.

Silfer was credited with four of Canisius’ six hits in the loss, which included her fourth double of the 2017 campaign. Junior Erika Mackie went the distance and took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits to go with two walks and two strikeouts.

Canisius will return to action March 10, when the Griffs travel to the state of Florida for its annual Spring Break trip. Canisius is scheduled to play 11 games in nine days in the Sunshine State, starting at the Under Armour Showcase in Tampa, Fla., when the team plays Central Connecticut State and Butler on March 10.
