The Canisius softball team tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to come-from-behind and edge La Salle, 5-4, to finish it neutral site series in Clearwater Florida, on Sunday. With the win the Blue and Gold improved to 9-9 overall this season, while the Explorers dropped to 9-8.
With the score knotted up 4-4, the Griffs used patience at the plate to help break through with the go-ahead run. Senior Lindsey Silfer reached on a fielders choice and made her way to second on the throw to put one on with two outs in the frame. An intentional walk to sophomore Lauren Castro put two Griffs on, while a walk to freshman Sydney Kreiman loaded the bases. The Explorers pitching issued one final free pass, as Junior Moriah Harris worked the walk, as she brought in Silfer to record the 5-4 win.
La Salle got the scoring started, plating a pair of runs in the top of the third. Canisius got one back in the home half of the frame to make it 2-1.
The Explores pushed its lead even further with a two-run rally in the top of the fourth, but again the Griffs responded in the bottom of the frame as a two RBI double by sophomore Denver Keller pushed the score to 4-3.
The Griffs knotted the game up thanks to a single by junior Madi Weathers, to make it 4-4, priror to the game-winning inning, in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Samantha Sharkey led the team offensively, recording a pair of hits and one RBI in four at bats. Keller paced the team in RBI with her two-RBI double, as she went 1-for-3 at the dish.
Junior Erika Mackie got the start for Canisius and worked 3.1 innings, and yielded five hits and four runs (three earned) in the no-deciison. Weathers came on in relief and worked 3.2 frames, and allowed just three hits and held the Explorers scoreless. She also recorded a pair of strikeouts in the victory.
• With the win the Griffs are now 3-1, all-time against La Salle.
• In six of Canisius’ nine wins this season, the Griffs’ offense has tallied five or more runs on the scoreboard.
The Griffs now head to Fort Myers, Florida for a pair of games on March 15. The Blue and Gold takes on Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast. Games are set for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
