Men's Soccer Announces Incoming Class

BUFFALO – Canisius men’s soccer head coach Dermot McGrane revealed his incoming class for the 2017 season on Thursday.

The 10-member group includes five players from New York, one from Canada, one from the Isle of Man and three from Italy. 

“We only graduated two starters from our 2016 team that made it to the semi finals of the MAAC, so I am excited to add a 10-member recruiting class that features at least seven players that will compete for playing time immediately and some that have the ability to start for us straight away,” McGrane said.

“Competition for playing time will be the really competitive next season which will make us a better team.”

Alessio Atzori | 6-1 | Freshman | Defender | Perugia, Italy | Liceo Classico Dante Alighieri

CLUB:
· Appeared in 11 games for Ribelle (2016) for head coach Simone Groppi, scoring one goal

· Played two seasons for Ravenna (2014-15) and head coach Andrea Mosconi, appearing in 32 games
· Spent four seasons (2011-14) with SPAL under coach Max Varricchio.
· Played 102 games with SPAL, recording 14 goals while also serving as team captain

 PERSONAL:
· Born Oct. 23, 1996

· Son of Gianluca Atzori and Francesca Del Bianco
· Father played professional soccer in Italy for 17 seasons. Has also spent seven seasons as a head coach in the Italian professional ranks.

McGrane on Atzori: “Alessio will immediately be a dominant Division I central defender.  He is good in the air, very composed with the ball at his feet, reads the game extremely well and is very quick. Alessio has the potential to start immediately as a freshman.”  

 
 

Deu Awuok | 5-11 | Freshman | Midfield | Rochester, N.Y. | Bishop Kearney

HIGH SCHOOL:
· Played four seasons at Bishop Kearney for coaches Bill McKee and Steve Strauss

· Finished prep career with 106 points on 30 goals and 46 assists
· Three-time all-league selection (2014, 2015, 2016)
· Two-time area all-star (2015, 2016)
· Second Team All-Greater Rochester in 2016 after tallying 29 points on 12 goals and seven assists during senior season
· Named Team MVP for senior campaign
· Led Kings in assists for three straight seasons
· Tied school record for assists in a season during junior campaign (20)
· Member of honor roll at Bishop Kearney. 

PERSONAL:
· Born August 25, 1997

· Son of Abraham Deu and Rebecca Dau
· Three brothers, Yaak, Akoi and Maluel
· Two sisters, Akon and Awal

McGrane on Awuok: “Deu has very good technique and ability to go at players 1-v-1.   He has all the tools that he needs to be a very good D1 player but may need a little bit of time to develop and adjust to the pace of the game at this level. We expect to see big things from him as he develops both as a soccer player and physically.”

 

Vince Cancilla | 5-10 | Freshman | Midfield/Forward | Grand Island, N.Y. | Canisius High School

HIGH SCHOOL:
·Played 2016 season at Canisius High School for head coach Chris Stuff

· All-Catholic First Team honoree
· Tallied 16 points on seven goals and two assists
· Earned first and second academic honors while at Canisius.

CLUB/ODP:
· Member of Empire United

· Also played on BSA Soccer Team
· Member of NYW Olympic Development Team and Region 1 Olympic Development Team
· Played in State Cups and Region 1 semifinals with both Buffalo and Rochester Teams
· Played on U.S. Soccer Development Academy for Empire U13/14, U16 & U18 teams.

PERSONAL: 
· Born Sept. 25, 1999

· Son of Mitchell and Rosary Ann Cancilla
· Brother, Mitchell, member of Canisius men’s soccer program

· One of six family members to attend Canisius

McGrane on Cancilla: “We are excited to have Vinnie join his brother Mitch for the 2017 campaign. Vinnie is a versatile player that can play in a number of different positions. He has very good technique, speed and can score goals. We hope to see him contribute immediately.”

 

Manuelle Cavazzoli | 5-8 | Freshman | Midfielder | Reggio Emina, Italy | Bus-Pascal 

CLUB:
· Played six seasons for Folgore Rubiera and head coach Ivano Vaconoio

· Helped lead squad to back-to-back regional championships (2012-13 and 2013-14)
· Also guided Folgore Rubiera to third place finish in senior regional championship in 2015-16
· Spent three seasons with Tricolore Reggiana prior to joining Folgore Rubiera 

PERSONAL:
· Born Dec. 9, 1996

· Son of Mauro Cavazzoli and Cinzia Giovanaroi
· Two brothers, Marco and Matteo
· One sister, Monia

McGrane on Cavazzoli: “Manuelle is a box-to-box midfielder, who is strong in the tackle and has some bite to his game. In addition to his work rate, Manuelle is extremely talented on the ball with a wide range of passes with both feet and excellent vision.  He will be a handful to play against for any midfielder next season.”

  Tom Crosbie | 6-6 | Freshman | Goalkeeper | Douglas, Isle of Man | Ridley College

HIGH SCHOOL:
· Played two seasons at Ridley College for Paul O’Rourke

· Two-time school MVP (2013, 2014)
· Scholarship Award recipient (2016-17)
· Also played basketball at Ridley. Named School MVP and most valuable newcomer

CLUB/ODP:
· Played for Niagara Falls Titans and coach Dan Pereira

PERSONAL:
· Born Sept. 6, 1999

· Son of Gary Crosbie and Tamara Henry
· Father played professional basketball in England for Elsemere Port Jets
· One sister, Madison

McGrane on Crosbie: “Thomas is a very tall goalkeeper with some great technical ability. We expect Thomas to spend his first year adjusting to the division one game and learning from our senior goalkeepers, but we feel he has the potential to be a dominant division one goal keeper in the future.”

  Lucas Slosser-McLean | 6-2 | Freshman | Defender | Walkerton, Ontario | Sacred Heart HS

HIGH SCHOOL:
· Played three seasons at Sacred Heart under coach Darryl Striukas

· Led Crusaders to 2016 district championship and 2015 regional championship
· Has recorded 75 points on 26 goals and 23 assists
· Has served as team captain for the past two seasons
· Has helped Crusaders post 18 shutouts in 34 games played

CLUB:
· Plays for Kitchner Spirit 99A for head coach Matt Allen

· Led squad to top 6 spot in 2016 provincial rankings
· Ontario Cup quarterfinals appearance and Sahlen Super Series champions

PERSONAL:
· Born Oct. 7, 1999

· Son of Greg McLean and Jayne Slosser

McGrane on Slosser-McLean: “We hope that Lucas can compete immediately for playing time on the right side of the field.  Lucas has a great work ethic, speed and competitive nature.  He is also a consciences defender that see’s the game well in front of him and can join the attack.”

 

Starson Sylvestre | 6-0 | Freshman | Defender | Brooklyn, N.Y. | International High School at Prospect Heights

McGrane on Szabo: “We feel that Nick is one of the best players coming out of western New York this year. He can play anywhere in the midfield or at outside back. He has very good pace and a great understanding of the game. He's a very simple player and keeps possession of the ball.  We are excited to see what he can do for us next season.”

  Filippo Tamburini | 6-4 | Freshman | Forward | Rimini, Italy | IPSIA LB Alberti – Rimini

CLUB:
· Spent two-plus seasons with A.C. Cesena, tallying 30 goals during time with club team

· Played one year with Fya Riccione, recording five goals

PERSONAL
· Born April 10, 1996

· Son of Mauro Tamburini and Katia Depaoli

McGrane on Tamburini: “Filippo is a 6-4 forward with great pace and technique.  His movement off the ball is excellent and he has the ability to score goals with his head or his feet.  We have very high expectations for Fillipo this year.”
