Canisius sophomore Lauren Castro had a career-high six RBI and hit her first career grand slam in game one, and junior Moriah Harris drove in a pair of runs with a double in the eighth inning of game two to give Canisius a sweep on the first day of the Upstate Classic in Greenville, South Carolina. The Golden Griffins posted a 12-4 win over Dayton in six innings in the first game before scoring a 3-0 win over host Furman in eight in the second game of the day. Canisius has now three straight to improve to 6-5 on the year.

In the first game against Dayton (6-5), the game was scoreless through two before Canisius broke things open with a six-run third, highlighted by the grand slam by Castro. Canisius added two more runs in the inning when sophomore Denver Keller ripped her team-leading third homer of the season, a two-run shot down the left-field line, to make the score 6-0 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Dayton scored a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-1, but Canisius added two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to earn the run-rule victory, the team’s first of the season. The team had 11 hits in the win, led by senior Samantha Sharkey, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman Cassie Ho also had two hits, including a double, and scored twice as well. The 12-runs were more than enough for junior Madi Weathers, who picked up her second win of the season after yielding two hits to go with four strikeouts.

After playing seven scoreless frames, Canisius scored three times in the eighth to record a 3-0 in extra innings win at Furman (8-9). The three runs in the eighth were more than enough support for junior Erika Mackie, who tossed a complete-game shutout and fanned a career-high nine en route to her third win of the season.

Canisius got its first two batters on in the eight thanks to a Furman error and a fielder’s choice that allowed Sharkey to reach safely on a bunt down the third-base line. After a passed ball allowed the runners to move to second and third, Harris smacked a double to right that drove in Sharkey and freshman Morgan Altman to make the score 2-0 in favor of Canisius. The Griffs added an insurance run in the frame when senior Lindsey Silfer followed Harris with a sacrifice-fly to center. The win in eight innings improved Canisius to 2-1 in extra-inning contests this season.

The Griffs will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take part in the second day of the Upstate Classic. Canisius will play Dayton at 11 a.m., before meeting co-host USC Upstate at 3 p.m.
