Baseball Takes On Marist At Home This Weekend

The Canisius College baseball team hosts a conference series at the Demske Sports Complex for the first time in five weeks, hosting Marist College. Saturday's games are presented by MC Sounds.

BATTING PRACTICE

  • The Canisius College baseball team hosts Marist College in a three-game series at the Demske Sports Complex this weekend.
  • The Golden Griffins are playing a MAAC series at home since the first weekend of conference play on March 23-24. Canisius went 6-3 during the nine road games.
  • The Griffs start the weekend on a six-game home winning streak, the longest streak at the Demske Sports Complex since a 10-game winning streak spanning the end of the 2010 and beginning of the 2011 season.
  • Canisius starts the weekend on a season-long nine-game winning streak. The Griffs have had a nine-game winning streak on two other occasions in program history, also in 2008 and in 1986.  
  • Canisius swept a three-game series at Manhattan last weekend, the first three-game sweep by the Griffs at Van Cortlandt Park in program history and first three-game sweep by a MAAC team in Riverdale since Le Moyne in May 2007.
  • Canisius is 21-7 in road games this season after the three-game sweep The Griffs enter the weekend first in the country at the Division I level with the 21 road wins.
  • Since starting the season 4-4, Canisius is 25-6 in its last 21 games.
  • Junior Jon Fitzsimmons was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, while infielder Anthony Massicci was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday.
  • Canisius has now had eight players win nine weekly conference awards. The eight players are twice as many as any other team in the MAAC while the nine awards are four more than any other school.
  • Canisius leads the MAAC in nine offensive categories, including by 19 points in batting average and by 1.2 in runs per contest.
  • The Canisius pitching staff leads the MAAC in strikeouts per nine innings (6.83) and in fewest walks per nine innings (2.84).
  • The Griffs also lead the MAAC in fielding percentage (.969).
  • Junior Garrett Cortright ranks 12th in the country in ERA (1.78) among pitchers with at least 70 innings pitched.
  • Junior Jesse Kelso ranks ninth in the country in on-base percentage.
  • Canisius has had four winning streak of five games or longer this season. The Griffs have had 15 winning streaks of five or more games since 2008, the highest total in the conference.
  • Three Canisius pitchers combined to throw the program’s first nine-inning no-hitter at the Division I level in an 8-0 win at Iona on March 29.
  • Canisius has 13 Canadians on its roster, the most at the NCAA Division I level.

 SERIES HISTORY VS. MARIST

  • Marist owns a 36-13 lead in the all-time series between the teams.
  • Canisius took two of three games in Poughkeepsie last season, winning a series from Marist for the first time since the 2008 season.
  • Marist has won the last four series between the teams at the Demske Sports Complex.
  • Neither team has swept the series since 2008, when Canisius won all three games at Marist.

MARIST SCOUT

  • Marist comes to the Demske Sports Complex with a 20-15-1 overall record and 11-4 record in the MAAC. The Red Foxes have won four of their five conference series this season.
  • Zach Shank leads the MAAC in batting average and runs scored while ranking third in RBI and fourth in slugging percentage. Mike Orefice leads the league in RBI and is also hitting .344 with a .473 on-base percentage.
  • Marist is hitting .287 as a team, averaging 5.7 runs, has a team ERA of 3.75 and has a team fielding percentage of .962.
  • Kevin McCarthy has bounced between a starter and a reliever, posting a 2-2 record and six saves in 15 appearances (five starts).
