BATTING PRACTICE

  • The Canisius baseball team concludes the regular season with a three-game series against Fairfield University at the Demske Sports Complex on Thursday and Friday.
  • Canisius qualified for the 2013 MAAC Championship with last weekend’s sweep of rival Niagara. The Golden Griffins will be playing in the conference tournament for the seventh consecutive season, the longest active streak by a baseball team in the MAAC.
  • Canisius is 25-9 in road games. The Griffs have the most road wins of any Division I team in the country, two ahead of the 23 road wins by Cal-State Fullerton.
  • Canisius starts the weekend with a 14-7 record in conference play, sitting in a tie with Siena College for third place in the MAAC standings. The Golden Griffins will either be the No. 2, No. 3 or No. 4 seed in next week’s MAAC Championship.
  • Since starting the season 4-4, Canisius is 34-9 in its last 43 games.
  • Canisius has won 38 games this season, which ties for the fourth-highest total in MAAC history. It is the fifth time in conference history that a MAAC team has won 38 or more games, with Canisius having three of those teams (2008 and 2009).
  • Canisius is 35-12 in MAAC series during the past six seasons, including 15 three-game sweeps and one two-game sweep.
  • Canisius has won 21 of its last 26 home conference series and 39 of its last 51 MAAC home games.
  • Freshman Alex Godzak was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday, winning the award for a league-best third time this season.
  • Junior Jesse Kelso was named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team on May 3, the eighth Golden Griffin to earn All-District honors in the last five seasons. Kelso is now eligible to be named a Capital One Academic-All American later this month.
  • Canisius leads the MAAC in eight offensive categories, including batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and runs per game.
  • The Canisius pitching staff leads the MAAC in strikeouts per nine innings and hits allowed per nine innings. The Griffs rank second in ERA and walks allowed per nine innings.
  • The Griffs also rank second in the MAAC in fielding percentage.
  • Canisius set a program record with an 11-game winning streak, ranging from April 10 to April 27. The Griffs saw that winning streak come to an end in an 11-6 loss to Marist in 10 innings on April 28.
  • Canisius has had four winning streaks of five games or longer this season. The Griffs have had 15 winning streaks of five or more games since 2008, the highest total in the conference.
  • Three Canisius pitchers combined to throw the program’s first nine-inning no-hitter at the Division I level in an 8-0 win at Iona on March 29.
  • Canisius has 13 Canadians on its roster, the most at the NCAA Division I level.
  • The final game of the series willbe the 500th in the career of Mike McRae at Canisius.

  • The teams also met in the first round of the MAAC Championship, with the Griffs winning 2-1 on a walk-off hit from Jose Torralba.
