The 110th season of Golden Griffin men’s basketball will officially start Monday, Nov. 11, in the Koessler Athletic Center when the team plays host to South Dakota. Season tickets for the combined men’s and women’s home slate can be purchased by calling the Canisius Ticket Office at (716) 888-2885 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

After playing at home against South Dakota, Canisius will travel south to Olean, N.Y., to take on long-time rival St. Bonaventure Nov. 16. The 162nd all-time meeting between the two schools will tipoff at 7 p.m., in the Reilly Center. From there, Canisius will be on the road and take part in the 2013 NIT Season Tip Off Nov. 18-19, with opponents and game sites to be determined.

The Golden Griffins will officially open their 24th season of MAAC play Friday, Dec. 6, when the team plays host to Saint Peter’s in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Blue and Gold will close out the opening weekend of conference play Sunday, Dec. 8, when the Siena Saints come to town. Following exam week, Canisius will travel to Holy Cross for a non-league game in Worcester, Mass. The game between the Griffs and the Crusaders will mark the first meeting since the two schools last met Feb. 25, 1990. The Blue and Gold will host Lamar Dec. 21, before the Christmas break and then travel to meet Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., Dec. 29. That game will mark the 24th all-time meeting between the Griffs and the Fighting Irish.

The Griffs are also scheduled to play at cross-town rival Buffalo and host Stony Brook during the non-conference portion of the season. Those game dates and times will be released when contracts are officially finalized.

Canisius will start the 2014 calendar year on the road Jan. 4, when the team travels to Jersey City, N.J., to play at Saint Peter’s. The Griffs will then travel to Marist for a Monday night game on Jan. 6, in the McCann Arena. The team will host Rider (Jan. 10) and one of the MAAC’s newest members, Monmouth (Jan. 12) before returning to the road to play at Iona (Jan. 17) and at Monmouth (Jan. 19). Canisius will return to the KAC for the annual “Battle of the Bridge” game against long-time rival Niagara. That game is set for Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Blue and Gold will also close out the regular-season series with Marist Jan. 26, and then the squad will head back on the road to play at Quinnipiac (Jan. 30) and at Fairfield (Feb. 1). The game against Quinnipiac, which is in its first year as a MAAC member, will be the first meeting in program history.

The MAAC’s New York City schools will be in Buffalo Feb. 7 and Feb. 9, as Manhattan and Iona travel to the Queen City for their annual Western New York swing. Canisius will travel to Lewiston, N.Y., to play at Niagara on Feb. 14, and then head to the New York state capital Feb. 16, for a game at Siena in the Times Union Center. The Blue and Gold will close out the home portion of the league slate Feb. 20 and Feb. 22, when Quinnipiac and Fairfield come to town, and then wrap up the regular season on the road at Rider (Feb. 28) and at Manhattan (March 2).

The 2014 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship will once again be played in the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass., March 6-11. The league’s championship game is set for Monday, March 11. The winner of that game will earn the conference’s automatic berth into the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The MAAC will officially announce its complete television schedule, with networks and tip times, as part of the MAAC Preseason Basketball Show, set to air on ESPN3 on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The Griffs return three starters and five letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a 20-14 overall record and an 11-7 mark in MAAC play. The 20-win campaign was the program’s first since 2000-01 and the Blue and Gold made their first appearance in the postseason since 1996, as the team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
