The Canisius College hockey team returns from the holiday break to face Hockey East foes UMass Lowell and Vermont at the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup in Burlington, Vt. The Griffs face the River Hawks on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. and the host Catamounts on Sunday at 7:05 p.m.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS
• Canisius (5-8-1, 4-4-1 AHA) is back in action for the first time in three weeks after splitting a pair of games at Army (8-2 win and 2-0 loss).
• Senior Kyle Gibbons leads the Griffs with 13 points and eight goals.
• Senior Tony Capobianco has started 9-of-14 games in net, posting a 3.10 goals against average and .908 save percentage.

GIBBONS REACHES SECOND MILESTONE OF THE YEAR
• Senior Kyle Gibbons continues to make headlines at Canisius, reaching a pair of milestones during his senior campaign.
• On Nov. 19, Gibbons became the eighth player in the school’s Division I history to reach 100 points for his career. He then became just the third Griff in the program’s history to score 50 career goals on Dec. 6.
• Gibbons is one of only six active players in the NCAA with 100 career points and 50 career goals.

POWER OUTAGE
• After a slow start, the Griffs are once again showing the form of their record-setting penalty kill from a year ago.
• The 11th-best unit in NCAA history last season, Canisius allowed 10 extra-man goals in its first 32 attempts (68.8 percent).
• Canisius has responded by allowing just one goal in the last 34 attempts, raising its penalty kill to 83.3 percent.

ADVANTAGE CANISIUS ON THE PENALTY KILL?
• Not only have the Griffs been dominant on the penalty kill in the last seven games but Canisius has actually outscored its opposition.
• Canisius has allowed only one power-play goal in the last seven games and 34 attempts, while scoring two short-handed tallies.
• Overall, the Griffs have four short-handed goals this season, tied for the fourth most in the country.

CANISIUS - UMASS LOWELL SERIES HISTORY
• The Griffs and River Hawks have played on two prior occasions with UMass Lowell owning a 1-0-1 edge.
• Both meetings between the two schools have been at in-season tournaments. The teams played to a 2-2 draw during the 2003-04 season in Buffalo, while the River Hawks claimed a 5-4 victory at Minnesota during the 2005-06 campaign.

ABOUT THE RIVER HAWKS
• UMass Lowell ranks 10th in the latest national polls.
• The River Hawks are 11-5-0 this season, including a 10-2-0 mark in the last 12 games.
• Derek Arnold leads the River Hawks with 12 points on seven goals and five assists. Adam Chapie (7g, 4a) and Joseph Pendenza (5g, 6a) are right behind with 11 points each.
• The River Hawks own the nation’s top scoring defense at 1.88 goals per game and have two netminders in the top six for goals against average.
• Connor Hellebuyck owns a 6-4-0 record in goal with a 1.72 goals against average and .947 save percentage, while Doug Carr is 5-1-0 with a 1.82 goals against average and .933 save percentage.

CANISIUS - VERMONT SERIES HISTORY
• The schools are meeting for the first time on Sunday.

ABOUT THE CATAMOUNTS
• Host Vermont enters the weekend with an 8-6-1 record on the year. The Catamounts lost their most recent game to Northeastern on Dec. 17, ending a five-game winning streak.
• Chris McCarthy leads the Catamounts with 13 points, five goals and eight assists. Mario Puskarich is second on the team with 11 points on five goals and six assists.
• Mike Santauida has seen a majority of time in net, posting a 2.40 goals against average and .919 save percentage.
