The Canisius College indoor track team will continue its season on Saturday, when the Griffs travel to the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the Spire North Coast Indoor Track and Field Open.

Canisius is fresh off the RIT Tiger Invitational last week, which saw a pair of Griffs take the top spot in events for the first time since the addition of the program this winter.

Sophomore Cooper Roach took home first place in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:32.60. Senior Catherine Phillips also placed first in an event, winning the 1-mile run (5:16.11).

“The team is really starting to get into seeing the progression through the meets,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “We’re able to get out and hit an indoor track once a week and really progress through the early season, which wouldn’t happen had we not had this opportunity. They’re improving and we’ve got a couple people who are on the verge of some records, so there’s really an excitement on the team where they’re seeing the results and seeing the progress, so they’re starting to look forward to the MAAC Championships.”

The Griffs will now head to the Spire Institute at 10 a.m. Saturday.

“This is a really good experience for us,” Huckle said. “It’s one of the best facilities in the country. It’s a 300-meter track where as most are between 160 and 200-meters. So our athletes are looking forward to some good performances on the wider corners to really set us up for refining things in the next two weeks at Brockport.”
