The Canisius College rowing team fell to Yale in the morning session of the Longhorn Invitational, and dropped the afternoon session to Texas on day one of the event.

The Varsity Eight, which was comprised of freshman Amber Giambone, sophomores Molly Murphy, Corrine Kickel, Julie Sciandra and Nora Kennon, seniors Lizabeth McKinney, Allison Braun and Bridget Lazewski, and sophomore coxswain Hannah Blum, kept it closest with the Bulldogs, finishing in 7:18.88, to Yale’s 6:44.2.

"I'm proud of how hard our women raced Yale -- despite the huge deficit in power and racing experience,” said head coach Joel Furtek. “There's still a lot to clean up, but we could see great gains from a week ago and look forward to the afternoon racing."

The Varsity Eight followed their morning performance with a time that was just over one second faster in the evening, but the Longhorns managed to pull out a victory by 23 seconds.

The Varsity Four raced first in the event for Canisius. Freshmen Jenni Vinci, Lauren Bielby and Jordan Szustak, sophomore Nicole Littlejohn and freshman coxswain Kaitlyn Taylor finished the 2,000-meter course in 8:35.40, behind Yale’s time of 7:37.6.

The boat finished the course in the night session in 8:37.9, with Texas rowing to a win in 8:01.06.

They were followed by the Second Varsity Eight of Freshmen Mikaela Braun, Chanel Davis, Erin Grim and Liz DelBarba, sophomores Megan Walsh and Ashley Tylenda, junior Liz Reinwald, senior Meghan Martin and sophomore coxswain Jordan Bamrick. The Griffs finished the race with a time 7:40.48, which was just under 45 seconds behind the Yale boat.

The crew finished the course in almost identical time the second trip down, finishing in 7:40.7, and wasn't enough for the Longhorns once again, who won with a time of 7:08.03.

Canisius will get back in action on Sunday vs. Tulsa at 9:50 a.m.
