Juniors Connor Panas and Rohn Pierce have been voted to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team. The Capital One Academic All-District Teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

In 39 games, Panas is hitting .321 with 12 doubles, 31 RBI, 20 walks and eight stolen bases. The Toronto, Ontario native is tied for the team lead with 15 multi-hit games along with a .385 batting average in conference play. Panas earned MAAC Player of the Week honors earlier this season and also hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the home opener against Buffalo on March 19.

At the start of the week, Pierce is one of seven players in the country with eight victories, at least 80 innings pitched and an ERA of 2.30 or better. The only pitcher in the conference to be named the MAAC Pitcher of the Week twice this season, Pierce has gone at least six innings in all 11 starts and has not walked more than two batters in any start in the 2014 season. In the season opener, Pierce outdueled All-American Carlos Rodon by throwing seven shutout innings as the Griffs defeated No. 5 North Carolina State, 3-0.

Pierce is one of two pitchers and Panas is one of four outfielders in District 1 to be named to the First Team. They now advance to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America voting. The Canisius baseball program has had four Academic All-Americans in the last four years – Drew Pettit in 2011 and 2012, Sean Jamieson in 2011 and Ian Choy in 2010.

Canisius (28-14, 11-4 MAAC), riding a six-game winning streak, returns to the field for a three-game series at second-place Quinnipiac University. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is set for noon.
