The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to break six school records on day one of the 2012 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center. Following Thursday's opening session, the Canisius men hold third place with 159 points, while the Griff women are currently sixth overall with 101.50 points.
To start the evening off right, the Canisius women's 200-freestyle medley relay team of junior Annelise Gunn-Taylor, senior Kara Powalski, sophomore Kelli Graber, and freshman Marissa Oakey set the school record in its fifth-place showing with a time of 1:37.75.
Canisius kept breaking the records, as the men's 200 freestyle relay team of senior Steve Pochatko, juniors Shawn Parkhurst and Mike Disco, and freshman Nick Sereday broke the school record, finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:24.67.
For the second time today, Oakey broke her own 500-freestyle school record in the A-final, securing a time of 4:58.54 for a fourth-place finish. In her conference championship debut, broke her own school record in the preliminaries (5:03.33).
In the A-final of the men's 500 freestyle, junior Corey Petrie placed fifth (4:40.06).
Junior Matt Moessinger broke the program record in the 200 IM preliminaries, posting a time of 1:54.34. Competing in the A-final portion, Moessinger placed sixth with a time of 1:54.82.
On the 1-meter board, freshman Eddie Quarantillo placed fourth in the A-final with his personal-best of 265.45. Also in the A-final, sophomore Joel Kowalski scored 208.80 to place seventh overall.
Competing in the B-final of the 200 IM, junior Tyler Carver (1:55.85) and Mike Disco (1:57.64) placed tenth and 13th, respectively.
In the women's 50-freestyle preliminaries, sophomore Kelli Graber came within two-hundredths of her school record (24.55) with a time of 24.57. The sophomore placed 11th overall in the B-final, posting a time of 24.74. Fellow Griff, Powalski, placed 13th in the B-final with a season-best of 25.00.
For the Canisius men, Pochatko placed seventh in the A-final of the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 21.40. In the B-final portion, Sereday recorded a time of 21.78.
Closing out day one of the conference championships for the Griff women, the 400 medley relay team of sophomore Maggie DeMarco, sophomore Anna Schena, freshmen Megan Sullivan and Oakey set the school record in its eighth-place finish (4:01.40). On the day, Oakey was involved in the setting of three school records.
In the final event of the evening, the men's 400-medley relay team of Pochatko, Carver, Moessinger, and Parkhurst broke the school record, placing second overall with a time of 3:23.10.
The Golden Griffins return to the Burt Flickinger Center on Feb. 17 to continue in the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships with the opening session beginning at 10 a.m.
