The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have announced their 2012-13 schedule. Head coach Scott Vanderzell announced the schedule that will include three home duals at the Koessler Athletic Center Pool.
Among the three home duals, the Golden Griffin men and women will welcome Binghamton, SUNY Geneseo, and Little Three rival St. Bonaventure to the KAC Pool.
The Golden Griffins will open the season at the Western New York Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13 on the campus of Big Four rival the University at Buffalo with the day scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
After a trip across town, the Golden Griffins will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 20 to face MAAC opponent Marist to open conference competition. Last season, the Golden Griffin men defeated Marist, 165-135, with the women falling to the Red Foxes, 179-118, at the Erie Community College Burt Flickinger Center on Nov. 6.
The next duals will keep the Griffs at home, as the team welcomes St. Bonaventure and Binghamton to the KAC Pool. The Griffs will first host the Bonnies on Friday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. followed by Binghamton on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 12:30 p.m. The Griffs will look to bounce back after last season's sweep by the Bonnies on the road in Olean, N.Y.
Including their home meet against the Bonnies, the Golden Griffins will compete in three duals within six days from Dec. 2-8. Beginning with their dual against the Bonnies, the Golden Griffins will travel to Cleveland State on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. and then return home to host SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m.
For the remainder of their schedule, the Golden Griffins will remain on the road. In the Griffs' final month of competition before the MAAC Championship in February, they will hit the road for three consecutive weekends.
After a month-long break, the Griffs return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 12 against Gannon at 11 a.m.
The following weekend, the Griffs will travel to Lewiston, N.Y. on Saturday, Jan. 19 to take on MAAC rival Niagara. Hosting the Purple Eagles at the KAC Pool last season, the Golden Griffin men and women completed a sweep of both squads. In the sweep, nine different Golden Griffins captured first-place finishes.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Golden Griffins close out their dual schedule at SUNY Fredonia with the action set to begin at 11 a.m.
Following a couple weeks of rest, the Golden Griffins will join Niagara as co-hosts of the 2013 MAAC Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championship at the Erie Community College Burt Flickinger Center from Feb. 14-16. This year will mark the third consecutive conference championship in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.
At last year's MAAC Championship, the Golden Griffin men and women recorded their highest point totals and best team finishes in program history at the conference championship. The men secured a second-place finish with 587.50 points, while the women finished fifth with 331.50 points.
Canisius returns 30 letterwinners, 17 men and 13 women, from last year's squad. The Griffs will welcome 12 newcomers for the upcoming season, six for each squad.
