The Canisius College men's and women's swimming and diving teams secured three of the four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference weekly honors, as announced by the conference office Tuesday. The Golden Griffin men swept the pair of weekly awards with senior Shawn Parkhurst named men's swimmer of the week and sophomore Eddie Quarantillo receiving men's diver of the week honors. For the Golden Griffin women, freshman Audrey Mulhisen secured the top spot as women's diver of the week.
For head coach Scott Vanderzell this marks the first time a Griff has received a weekly honor. On the men's side, the selection of Parkhurst and Quarantillo is the first in either category for the Griffs in program history. Mulhisen's selection marks the first time a Griff female diver has received a conference weekly-selection since Kaeli Abdo on Jan. 21, 2008.
The Griffs' sweep of the weekly diving awards lends credit to the team's hard work and determination on the boards under the direction of 2012 MAAC Diving Coach of the Year Meili Carpenter.
Winning the 1-meter event while setting the Koessler Athletic Center pool record in the 3-meter against Binghamton on Dec. 2, Mulhisen stayed strong throughout the week. At the Cleveland Dual, hosted by Cleveland State on Dec. 4, the freshman dominated the boards, setting both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving school records. In Cleveland, Mulhisen captured first in the 1-meter with a score of 235.55 followed by a second-place performance in the 3-meter by posting a tally of 250.65. The freshman broke both former Griff Kaeli Abdo's records, which stood since 2007-08. In the Golden Griffins' home finale against SUNY Geneseo at the KAC, Mulhisen broke her own pool record with a first-place score of 257.55.
At the Cleveland Duals on Dec. 4, Parkhurst broke a program record for the second-straight meet with his second-place finish in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:43.23. In the Golden Griffins' home finale against SUNY Geneseo on Dec. 8, the three-time MAAC individual champion secured the top finish in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:49.74 with a season-best performance going on to place first in the 200-yard butterfly.
In the Griffs' home-finale at the Koessler Athletic Center against SUNY Geneseo, Quarantillo placed first in the 1-meter event with a season-best score of 271.43. At the Cleveland Dual on Dec. 4 against host Cleveland State, John Carroll, Case Western Reserve, and Notre Dame College, Quarantillo placed third in the 1-meter event with a score of 269.10, his previous season-high.
The Blue and Gold return to action on January 12 at Gannon University in Erie, Pa. at 11 a.m.
