Baseball Wins Series Opener At Longwood

Getting another strong pitching performance from junior Garrett Cortright and a balanced attack on offense, the Canisius baseball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 12-6 win over Longwood University on Friday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improve to 8-4 overall. 

Eight Golden Griffins recorded hits, runs and RBIs in the game with junior Jesse Kelso going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior Brooklyn Foster reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Shane Zimmer also reached base four times, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior Jimmy Luppens also had two hits and two RBI in the game.

The Griffs got on the board with two runs in the first as junior Ryan Coppinger led off with a single and freshman Brett Siddall followed with an RBI triple. Siddall would score on an error later in the inning. Canisius scored two more runs in the third as Luppens reached with a one-out double and then scored on an RBI double from Kelso. Walks to Zimmer and sophomore Connor Panas loaded the bases, with Kelso scoring on another Longwood error to make it 4-0.

Longwood cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the third, and the Griffs added a run in the fifth on an RBI double from Zimmer. Canisius broke the game open with four runs in the seventh and three more runs in the ninth. The first three Canisius batters of the seventh reached with Foster being hit by a pitch to force home a run. Junior Jose Torralba and Coppinger had sacrifice flies later in the inning. Luppens had a two-RBI single in the ninth and a walk to junior Ronnie Bernick forced home a run in the ninth.

Cortright won for the fourth time in as many starts, going 7.1 innings. The junior allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits, walked three and struck out seven. Junior Tyler Soucie pitched the final 1.2 innings.

Canisius and Longwood continue the four-game series on Saturday, with the doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
