The Canisius baseball team was unable to complete the weekend sweep, losing 4-0 at Siena College on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fall to 34-13 overall and 11-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Siena (21-26, 11-7 MAAC) scored the game’s first run in the third inning, taking advantage of a leadoff single by Vincent Citro. A two-out, RBI single from Brian Fay put the Saints up 1-0. Siena pushed across three more runs in the fifth with a two-out rally. A single from Mike Fish, followed by an RBI double from Larry Balkwill gave Siena a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Mike Allen forced home a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Nick Wolyniec also forced home a run with a bases-loaded walk to give the Saints a four-run advantage.
Siena starter Matt Gage (5-5) held the Griffs’ offense scoreless and to only three hits in the game. Gage walked one batter and struck out four in the complete-game victory. Gage limited Canisius to three singles in the game, with the only Golden Griffin getting to second base in the ninth inning.
Sophomore Devon Stewart (4-4) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings. Four Canisius relievers combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Canisius returns to the field for a three-game series against rival Niagara University next weekend. The Battle of the Bridge series will start on Friday night at the Demske Sports Complex, with first pitch for the single, nine-inning game set for 6:30 p.m.
