Canisius College swimming and diving coach Scott Vanderzell has announced the hiring of Ian O’Rourke as the diving coach. O’Rourke comes to Canisius after serving as the assistant diving coach at Niagara University this past year.
“Bringing Ian in will help the program continue to move forward,” Vanderzell said. “He’s replacing a very good coach, but he’ll bring in a new energy and that will help us move forward.”
A 2012 graduate of Niagara, O’Rourke served as the diving captain for three seasons where he won five MAAC Championships and two ECAC Championships. He also earned MAAC Most Outstanding Diver honors in 2009, 2011 and 2012, ECAC Most Outstanding Diver in 2009 and 2011, and Niagara’s Vincent O’Malley Award for Male Athlete of the Year in 2009.
O’Rourke is also the only two-time male recipient of the Niagara Purple Heart Award, which recognizes a student-athlete’s contributions on and off the field.
O’Rourke earned his bachelor’s degree in International Studies and a Master’s of Interdisciplinary Studies at Niagara and still holds school records in all four diving categories.
In addition to his previous coaching duties with the Purple Eagles, O’Rourke served as a volunteer coach for Grand Island High School’s diving team and Wings Diving at the University at Buffalo.
