SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Canisius College women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 2 Syracuse (3-0, 0-0 ACC) in the team’s season opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Orange scored the game’s first eight goals en route to topping the Griffs 18-6.

“I thought our girls battled to the end, which is a good sign, but you can’t spot a team an eight goal lead and expect to win,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “I thought Kayla played very well in net and Meghan Cuddy did a good job of finishing her chances. But, I also thought we struggled to clear the ball, when you can’t get it out of your end, chances are that ball is going to end up in your net.”

Junior Kayla Scully tied a career high with 12 saves, and junior Meghan Cuddy scored three times in the loss, including the first two goals of the season for the Griffs.

Cuddy’s first goal came off a free position opportunity, then scored again moments later when junior Tori Quinn fed her from behind the net, which cut the Canisius lead to 8-2.

Syracuse would open its lead right back up after controlling three draws in a row, helping lead to five straight goals. The Orange would carry the 13-2 lead into half.

The Griffs got back on the board with the first goal of the second half, as Quinn shot around a Syracuse defender to make it 12-3. Syracuse and Canisius would then trade goals for the next four possessions, with sophomore Caroline Ogden scoring her first goal of the season and Cuddy tallying one more. Senior Maria Kotas scored the games final goal after the Orange tallied three more to end the contest.

The schedule won’t get any easier for the Griffs as they travel to take on No. 1 North Carolina on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.

GAME NOTES: The Griffs kept up with the Orange on draw controls in the first half, trailing 9-7 in the category at the break, but the Orange won 8-of-10 in the second half… Cuddy’s three goals were one short of her career high four, which she set at Manhattan last season... Scully has made a career-high 12 saves on three occasions following today’s contest.
