The Canisius softball team started its Spring Break trip in California with a pair of losses on Friday, falling to Cal State Fullerton 7-2, before losing to Texas Tech by the score of 10-5 in the nightcap of the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif.. The Golden Griffins have now dropped three straight and sit at 3-10 on the year.
In the first game, the host Fullerton Titans (16-10) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings and never looked back. Canisius scored twice in the top of the third with two outs on RBI-singles from Alexis Roman and Robin Kennery. Fullerton answered with two more runs in its half of the third to regain its five-run cushion.
Canisius had four hits in the loss, with freshman Jessica Berzins collecting two of those. Fullerton’s Monique Wesley went the distance in the circle for the Titans to earn the win. She allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five. Canisius senior Jen Consaul took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed seven runs, five earned, on 12 hits while fanning two and walking none.
In the second game of the day against Texas Tech, the Red raiders scored seven times in the game’s first three innings, highlighted by a four-spot in the bottom half of the third, en route to the 10-5 victory. The win improved Texas Tech to 20-6 on the year. Kennery drove in two runs for the Griffs and freshman Lindsay Silfer had two hits, including a double. Canisius freshman Sarah Andrews took the loss for the Griffs after she allowed eight runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking two. Jenn Solis allowed two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief.Canisius will return to action Saturday with a pair of games in the Titan Classic. The team will play DePaul at 3 p.m., before taking on UNLV at 5:30 p.m
