The Canisius College women’s lacrosse team dropped its first conference game in nearly two years after falling to Marist 10-9 on Wednesday afternoon, snapping a nine-game winning streak in league play.

The Red Foxes controlled much of the first half, taking a 5-2 lead into the locker room and was able to hold off a Canisius rally in the second.

After Canisius battled back to tie the game at nine, junior attacker Tori Quinn appeared to score the go-ahead goal with just over one minute to play. Following a stick check, Quinn’s goal was disallowed due to an illegal pocket.

On the ensuing possession, Marist’s Kara McHugh netted the game winner with 21 seconds to play.

“I think our team had been coasting a bit through our last few games and today it caught up to us,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “We got off to a poor start today and made a lot of unforced turnovers, which is uncharacteristic for us. We need to get back to getting off to a quick start, playing for a whole 60 minutes and really limiting our mistakes.”

The Griffs, who entered the contest averaging 14 turnovers per game, had made 13 at halftime and were just 8-14 on clears at the break. They'd finish with 20 turnovers and 15-22 on clears.

Senior midfielder Maria Kotas and sophomore attacker Taylor Giglio led Canisius offensively, each netting three goals. Quinn, junior attacker Meghan Cuddy and sophomore midfielder Ashley Bull each chipped in a goal as well. Bull also had a team-high five draw controls, while Kotas added five ground balls.

Senior defender Gabby Kotas, who caused three turnovers and collected four ground balls in the game, anchored the Griffs’ defensive effort.

The Blue and Gold now sit at 1-1 in MAAC play, with its next contest coming at Quinnipiac on Sunday with first draw scheduled for noon.

GAME NOTES: The loss was Canisius’ first loss to a MAAC opponent since a 13-11 loss at Marist on April 14, 2012… Including postseason play, the Griffs had won 13-straight against MAAC opponents… Canisius has been held in single digits in four of their five losses this season.
