LEWISTON, N.Y. - The Canisius College women’s lacrosse team defeated longtime rival Niagara 19-12, behind goals from 12 different Griffs.

After Niagara recorded the game’s first goal, the Blue and Gold would score 10-straight to jump out to a 10-1 advantage with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.

The teams went into the break with Canisius leading 11-4, with 10 Griffs contributing a goal in the period.

“I thought we got off to a slow start and needed to call a timeout, but I thought we regrouped well with our shot placement,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “All in all, I’m happy with the win, but we’ve got some work to do, we had too many fouls inside the eight on defense. But our transition game was a positive today.”

Canisius continued the pressure into the second half, as the Purple Eagles would never get within seven goals.

The Griffs were led offensively by junior Tori Quinn, who recorded a game-high five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore attacker Taylor Giglio had a team-high three goals in the game, while senior midfielder Maria Kotas, sophomore attacker Caroline Ogden, and junior attackers Meghan Cuddy and Whitley Perry each recorded a pair of goals.

Senior defender Taylor Smith netted her first career goal in the contest and sophomore midfielder Ashley Bull, junior midfielders Brenna Murray and Tori Greco and freshmen midfielders Rachel Toole and Ashley Heisler each scored a goal to round out the scoring.

Junior goalkeeper Kayla Scully had eight saves on the evening in just under 55-minutes of play.

Kotas led the Griffs defensively with four caused turnovers, seven ground balls and finished second to Bull’s team-high seven draw controls with four.

Senior defender Stephanie Schmalz tied career-highs with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Griffs improved to 10-5 on the year and the team will now return home to take on Fairfield in the team's final regular season contest on Saturday. First draw is scheduled for noon.

GAME NOTES: 12 players to score in a game is a program record… The Griffs lost the draw control battle for the first time in their five-game winning streak… Canisius has outscored opponents 51-20 in the first half of games during their five-game winning streak... Canisius has 10 wins for the fifth-consecutive season.
