Canisius President John J. Hurley has been voted Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference President, the MAAC Council of Presidents announced late last week. Hurley will serve as the MAAC President for the next two years.

As the MAAC President, Hurley will work with MAAC Commissioner Richard J. Ensor, Esq., on the oversight of the league, develop governance agendas for various governing bodies, serve as the chair of the executive committee which handles major business decisions between the Council of Presidents meetings and oversee and sign all major league contracts.

“I am excited to work with President Hurley in his new leadership position within the conference,” Ensor said.  “In the past few years, John has provided tremendous guidance and insight to the MAAC Council of Presidents as the league has worked through some challenging issues related to NCAA governance and litigation in his role as a member of the NCAA Division I Presidential Advisory Group.  In addition, his experience has been valuable as the MAAC underwent membership restructuring. In his new post as MAAC President, his knowledge and leadership will continue to assist in maintaining a league committed to excellence in academics and athletics.”

The MAAC Council of Presidents serves as the Board of Trustees for the conference. The affairs of the conference are managed by the Council of Presidents, and the Council of Presidents may exercise all powers of the conference that are not, by the conference’s bylaws, directed or required to be exercised by the Commissioner or other designated Committee.

Hurley assumed his position as the 24th President of Canisius College July 1, 2010. His is the first lay president in the school’s 142-year history. A 1978 alumnus of Canisius, President Hurley served from 1997-2010 as executive vice president of the College and vice president for college relations. In these positions, he oversaw the college’s advancement operations, which included development, public relations, alumni relations, government relations and community relations. He also managed institutional strategic planning, integrated marketing, and legal and compliance issues. In addition, he served as secretary to the Canisius College Board of Trustees.

Hurley recently completed his two-year appointment as the MAAC Vice President. He replaces Saint Peter’s President Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., as the MAAC President. The conference also announced that Manhattan College President Dr. Brennan O’Donnell has been elected to serve as the MAAC Vice President.
