The Canisius College Athletics Department hosted the annual Shoes for the Shelter 5K Run/Walk on Saturday afternoon in Forest Lawn Cemetary. Over 500 runners took part in the event presented by Independent Health.
In the men's field, Chris Walters of Buffalo, N.Y. broke the men's previous course record by two seconds with a first-overall finish of 15:25. The previous record was held by Chris Muldoon.
On the women's side, Jennifer Koeppel-Acker of Cheektowaga, N.Y. captured her second Shoes for the Shelter 5K title in the past three years by finishing in the top spot with a time of 18:01.
Athletics staff member Nate Lull secured first in the Canisius men's faculty/staff/administrator category with a time of 18:15. Associate professor of education, Dr. Ellen Hamm, won the women's faculty/staff/administrator title with a time of 24:37.
In the student category, a pair of swimmers took top honors in both the male and female categories. Kelli Graber (21:34) won the women's student title, while Tyler Evans (18:28) secured the men's student title.
A pair of former Griffs, swept the alumni titles on the men's and women's sides. Vasilis Kariolis' second-overall finish led him to the men's alumni title, clocking in at 15:54. Canisius Hall of Famer Heather Appenheimer captures the women's alumni crown in a time of 20:39.
