The win in the season opener over the Bonnies moves Canisius to 22-12 all-time in the first game of the season. The Golden Griffins will return to action Sunday with a pair of games in the Cleveland State Indoor Tournament, starting at 10 a.m., when the team plays Bucknell. Canisius will also play St. Bonaventure for the second time this weekend, with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
Canisius started the 34th season in program history with a 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure (0-6). The Griffs broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the second and added the team added another run in the fourth inning. Sophomore Michelle DelPrince went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored in the game one victory and senior pitcher Amanda Baun went five shutout innings where she allowed just two hits to earn the win in the circle.
In the second, freshman Tori Nappo drove in the first run of the season with an RBI-double to right, and DelPrince followed with a base hit to left that allowed senior Stephanie Pfentner and Tori Nappo to score. After DelPrince stole second, freshman Alexis Roman picked up her first career RBI with an infield single to short.
Leading 3-0 in the fourth frame, Pfentner started the inning with a single and then was lifted for pinch-runner Kalie Michalski. Michalski would advance to third on a pair of wild pitches and she came across the plate moments later when DelPrince lined a base hit to right. The Bonnies scored two runs in the top of the sixth off junior Jen Consaul, who came on in relief of Baun and allowed two runs, both of which were unearned, on two hits in two innings. Consaul earned the save for her efforts.
The Blue and Gold racked up nine hits in the game one victory, with DelPrince, Pfentner and freshman Meghan Cuda all have multi-hit games.
Canisius jumed out to an early 2-0 lead on the host Cleveland State Vikings, but Cleveland State scored three times in the fourth and three more times in the sixth to earn the 7-4 win. Cleveland State moves to 2-5 on the season with the victory.
Canisius got on the board first as junior Valorie Nappo crossed the plate thanks to a fielding error by Cleveland State's defense. Tori Nappo also scored in the frame as she raced home from third base after a wild pitch. The Vikings scored three times in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, with the key hit coming from Cleveland State freshamn Allyson Broschk, who knocked in a pair of runs with a base hit to right.
Broschk drove in another run and scored a run in the sixth as Cleveland State took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Valorie Nappo made it a three-run game at 6-3 with an RBI-single that allowed sophomore Robin Kennery to score, but the Vikings added an insurance tally in the seventh to make the game 7-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Roman posted another RBI with a base hit back up the middle that allowed DelPrince to score from second base.
Consaul took the loss for the Griffs in the nightcap after she allowed three runs on six hits while fanning two and walking one. Sophomore Corrine Schaus came on in relief and allowed four runs on six hits to go with a strikeout.
Valorie Nappo had two hits and an RBI in the losing effort for Canisius, while Roman also added a hit and a run batted in for the Blue and Gold.
