The Canisius baseball team took the final game and won the four-game series at Longwood with a 7-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins have won six of their last seven games and improve to 10-5 on the season.
Three Canisius pitchers combined for the team's first shutout of the 2013 season. Freshman Alex Godzak earned his first collegiate win by going seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out four. Senior Jason Rubenstein went 1.1 innings and sophomore Eric Stolzenburg got the final two outs to finish the shutout.
A balanced and efficient Canisius attack led to the seven runs that were scored on eight hits. Junior Jesse Kelso was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI and a run scored. Freshman Brett Siddall was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior Shane Zimmer had two RBI and also scored a run while sophomore Mike Booth was 1-for-3 with an RBI single.
Canisius concludes its season-opening 19-game road trip with at Ohio University next weekend. The four-game series begins on Friday, with first pitch in Athens, Ohio set for 4 p.m.
