The Canisius volleyball team lost in four sets at defending league champion Fairfield University on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 11-25, 19-25, 25-23, 23-25.
Sophomore Rachel Kline led the Griffs with 12 kills, her third straight match with double-digit kills. Kline also posted her second double-double in the last three matches with 12 digs. Sophomore Lauren Siebert had seven kills and five blocks as Canisius totaled nine team blocks. Sophomore Grace Streicher had a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs.
“When you fall in a 2-0 hole, especially on the road, a lot of things have to go right to complete that type of comeback,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Fairfield generated momentum early in the match and later in the fourth set. We weren’t able to execute well enough to stop their runs.”
Fairfield (7-11, 5-3 MAAC) dominated the first set as the Stags hit .531 and totaled 17 kills to take the opening stanza. The Stags wouldn't trail in the opening two sets and jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the second set. Canisius would cut the deficit to 19-18 on a solo block from Streicher, but the Stags regained control by winning four straight points en route to going up 2-0 in the match.
Canisius built an early 12-9 lead in the third set, but the Stags tied the score at 16-16 and eventually took a 20-19 lead. The Griffs didn’t go away quietly as they won four of the next five points, capped by a service ace from freshman Katlyn Tyler, to go up 23-21. Canisius went on to win the third set on their second set point, which came on a Fairfield attack error.
In the fourth set, the Griffs used a five-point run on the serve of Tyler to go up 17-9 after three consecutive blocks from the Canisius defense. Fairfield came storming back, winning 10 of the next 12 points to knot the score at 19-19. The teams traded sideouts, but the Stags then won back-to-back points to go up 23-21. After a kill from freshman Jacklyn Malusa made it 23-22, the Stags took the next point to set up two match points. A kill from Siebert fought off the first set point, but the Stags won the match on a kill from Hayley Moyer.
Rachel Romansky posted a double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs, recording her 4,000th career assist in the match. Caitlin Stapleton and Marilyn Peizer each recorded a match-high 14 kills.
Canisius concludes its weekend road trip to the East Coast on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins play at Quinnipiac. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
Notes: Fairfield defeated Canisius in Alumni Hall for the third consecutive season… Streicher had her fourth double-double of the season… Tyler posted double-digit digs for the fifth consecutive match, the longest streak by a Canisius outside hitter since Morgan Ammons had a streak of six straight matches (Sept. 25-Oct. 11) during the 2007 season … Siebert had five or more blocks for the fourth time in the last 10 matches.
