Canisius, MAAC Named Frozen Four Host Finalist

Canisius College, Niagara University and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference were selected as a finalist for hosting the Frozen Four, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. 

Canisius, the MAAC and Niagara are one of 10 finalists bidding to serve as a host for the one of the Frozen Four events held in 2015 through 2018. The arena along with the Buffalo Sabres, Canisius and Niagara previously hosted the event in 2003. 

The finalists for 81 of the 89 championships were selected by the respective sport committees, which are made up of coaches and administrators from NCAA member schools and conferences, from an original pool of 1,948 bids.

The committees will select the winning sites, which must then be approved by the appropriate divisional championships cabinets/committees before being announced via webcast at on Dec. 11. The announcement will also include all pre-determined regional host sites.

The MAAC has also submitted bids to be a regional host for the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse quarterfinal rounds at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Those bids cover from 2014-15 through 2017-18. The MAAC was also selected as a finalist to host NCAA Championships for women's rowing and wrestling.

In March 2014, the MAAC will serve as co-host of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship second and third rounds at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, along with league members Canisius and Niagara. This year’s championship marks the fifth time since 2000 that Buffalo has served as a host city, and all four previous events were sellouts.
