Joe Cavanaugh ('38) - The basketball team captain as a senior in 1938, Cavanaugh was a member of the varsity basketball team from 1935-1938. In his sophomore season the team was Little Three Champions and held a 14-2 record. In his junior season the right guard made 39 field goals and 27 free throws for an average of 5.6 points per game and finished the season with 105 points in 17 games.
The team finished the season 10-7 as Little Three Champions for the second season with Cavanaugh at right guard. He was named to the All-District team, All Little Three first team and was a candidate for All American Honors. The 1936-37 team was ranked 6th in the nation by Eddie Murphy.
In his senior season, Cavanaugh was named captain and made 69 field goals and 27 free throws, averaging 9.7 points per game. He was the leading scorer with 165 points on the season and was named to the Evening News All District Team, the All Little Three team for the third consecutive season, and was named to Niagara's All Opponent Team. Cavanaugh was also selected for the United Press All State second team.
