Nick Macarchuk (Basketball Coach, 1977-1987)- In a decade of coaching Golden Griffin basketball, Macarchuk revived the fortunes and status of the Canisius Program. From 1977-1978, he led the team to a winning record of 53.8 percent. With a career total of 149 wins, Macarchuk held the record of most wins ever by a men's basketball coach. In 1985, the Griffs went to the NIT playoffs, their first ever post-season appearance in 22 years. Under his direction, his teams posted consecutive 20-win seasons (1984-85 and 1985-86) for the first time in school history. In 1982 he was named District I Coach of the Year. In 1984 he was named North Atlantic Coach of the Year. Two years later he earned kudos as New York State Division I Coach of the Year. The NBA drafted several Canisius players during Macarchuk years, including Phil Seymore (1982, New York Knicks), Robert Turner (1984, Houston Rockets), Mike Smrek (1985, Portland Trail Blazers), and Ray Hall (1985, Utah Jazz).
