During his sophomore year, the Griffin basketball squad posted 17 wins including victories over St. Louis, Notre Dame, Georgetown and St. Bonaventure. Hedderick was also the leading moundsman with a .500 average (2-2) as the Golden Griffins baseball team went 5-9 in 1951. That same season he pitched a one-hitter until the ninth inning against Sampson Air Base, retiring 13 fliers via the strike-out route, as well as pitching relief to save a 10-inning game against Siena in an 11-10 win.
