The Canisius women's basketball team lost 51-41 to Marist College in the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday evening. With the loss, the Golden Griffins fall to 6-10 overall and 3-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Ashley Durham was the lone Golden Griffin to reach double figures, scoring a game-high 16 points in 34 minutes. Sophomore Kayla Hoohuli had a team-high nine rebounds while junior Jen Morabito added eight points.

"Both teams struggled offensively to start the game, but we let it affect our game for too long," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "Marist created a lot of separation in the first half, and we couldn't dig out that hole."

The teams combined to make one of their first 16 shots in the game, with Marist scoring the first 12 points of the game and building a 15-1 lead on a 3-pointer from Madeline Blais. The Griffs used a layup from senior Ashley Wilkes to make it 15-5 with 9:32 left, their first field goal of the contest. Marist limited Canisius to 2-for-24 from the floor in the first half and took a 25-9 lead into the locker room.

The Griffs opened the second half on a 13-5 run, using a fast-break layup from Wilkes off a pass from Durham to get within eight points at 30-22. Canisius forced a shot clock violation but couldn't take advantage as the Griffs turned the ball over on the ensuing possession. Canisius trimmed the deficit to eight points on three more occasions, but could never get any closer.

Elizabeth Beynnon led Marist (10-6, 5-0 MAAC) with 14 points while Casey Dulin and Sydney Coffey each had 12 points, with Coffey recording nine rebounds. Marist shot 28.3 percent from the floor, 11.1 percent (2-for-18) on 3-pointers and 74.2 percent (23-for-31) from the free-throw line.

Canisius concludes the weekend against Rider University in the KAC on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Marist defeats Canisius for the ninth consecutive meeting, the longest winning streak in the series between the teams... The nine points scored by the Griffs are the fewest by a Canisius team in a half in the program's Division I history... Durham scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game, the longest streak of her career... Hoohuli drew a charge for the ninth time in the last 12 games.
