The Canisius volleyball team lost both matches on day two of the Golden Griffin Invitational. The Golden Griffins lost 25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 to the University of Hartford and then fell 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 to Cleveland State in the Koessler Athletic Center.

“I didn’t think our energy level against Hartford was where it should be, and that’s something we need to focus on right now,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We were forced into some lineup changes, and we will get through those, but we need to get back to playing at the intense level that has made this program successful.

Hartford 3, Canisius 1

The Hawks won the opening two sets, using a four-point run midway through the first set to build a 15-11 lead. The Griffs got within two at 22-20 on a kill from freshman Jacklyn Malusa but the Hawks won the last three points to take the opening set. In the second set, Hartford never gave up the lead after using another five-point spurt to go up 7-2 and went on to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Down 8-5 in the third set, Canisius went on a six-point run to take an 11-8 lead after a kill from sophomore Grace Streicher. The Hawks came back and eventually took the lead at 15-14 in a set that featured 12 ties and six lead changes. Canisius got a powerful kill from senior Emily Elek to go up 20-19. The Griffs then used a kill from senior Roxanne Hernandez on an overball to take a 24-21 lead and a block from Hernandez and Streicher to force a fourth set.

Canisius used that momentum to jump out to quick leads of 6-0 and 10-2 in the fourth set. The Hawks came right back and used a 12-3 run to go up 14-13. A kill from Hernandez evened the score at 19-19 but Hartford gained control by winning the next four points and went on to win the match.

Malusa posted a double-double (10 kills, 11 digs) in her third collegiate match. Senior Sydney Palka had 23 assists and six digs. Sophomore Lauren Siebert had six kills on nine attack attempts. Siebert and Hernandez each had three blocks.

Cleveland State 3, Canisius 0

The Vikings won the first seven points of the match and never looked back in the opening set. Canisius held an early 11-8 lead in the second set before Cleveland State scored four straight points to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The Vikings broke open the set with a 5-1 run and went on to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Cleveland State scored five straight points midway through the third set to go up 16-10. Canisius battled back and used a service ace from Streicher to get within two at 19-17. The Vikings would never give up the lead and scored the final two points of the match to close out the match.

Canisius returns to the court for four matches next weekend at the Mountaineer Invitational in Morgantown, W. Va. The Golden Griffins start play against Fordham at 2 p.m. on Friday, before facing the host West Virginia at 6:30 p.m.
