The Canisius volleyball team saw its season-long four-match winning streak come to an end in a three-set loss at Iona College on Friday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 to the host Gaels in the Hynes Athletic Center as Canisius falls to 10-14 overall and 8-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Jacklyn Malusa led Canisius with 11 kills, her ninth match this season with double-digit kills. Senior Emily Elek had 10 kills and four blocks while senior Roxanne Hernandez led the Griffs with five blocks. Junior Emily Litwin added 19 digs.

“We knew going into this last portion of the schedule that we would have to win points and key portions of the match, and we just made too many critical errors at critical times,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “Iona played better than us today and brought more energy and aggressiveness throughout the entire match.”

Canisius scored the first seven points of the match on the serve of senior Sydney Palka and built a 14-5 lead after a kill from Malusa. The Gaels then used a 10-1 run to even the score at 15-15. Another kill from Malusa halted that spurt from the Gaels while Canisius didn’t trail until Iona went up 21-20 after a block. A kill from Malusa made it 22-22 but the Gaels took the final three points of the set.

Iona (12-12, 10-4) built the big lead in the second set, going up 12-6 and eventually leading 17-11. Canisius got back in the set with a 7-2 run, including two kills from Malusa and a block and kill from Hernandez. Canisius eventually evened the score at 21-21 and a kill from senior Jessica Warner gave Canisius the lead at 22-21. Iona would win the next three points to go up 24-22. The Griffs fought off a set point on a kill from Warner but the Gaels cashed in on their second chance to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Gaels pulled away midway through the third set. The Griffs went up 11-10 on a kill from Hernandez, but Iona scored the next seven points to break it open and went on to close out the match.

Alicja Pawelec led all players with 13 kills. Katy Crouse posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Madisyn Spence recorded a match-high 20 digs and Natalie Ziskin had a match-best 35 assists.

Canisius concludes the weekend at Manhattan on Saturday, with match time set for 1 p.m.

Notes: The Griffs lost for the first time in 19 days… Canisius lost at Iona for the seventh consecutive season… Freshman Katlyn Tyler had double-digit digs for the eighth time on the season… Hernandez had five or more blocks for the eighth time this year. She has 87 block assists on the season, which ranks eighth in program history… Elek is averaging 1.08 blocks per set in MAAC play.
