Senior defender Ben Danford of the Canisius College hockey team collected third-team All-Atlantic Hockey honors, announced by the conference on Thursday.

Danford leads all Griffs defenders with 24 points this season, recording four goals and 20 assists. He is also tied for the team lead with his 20 assists and ranks 19th nationally among defensemen in Division I with 0.67 points per game.

The senior has anchored the Canisius defense since first arriving on campus. Danford has collected the team’s Top Defensemen award in each of his first three seasons with the Griffs and ranks among the best to wear the Blue and Gold. He owns the program’s record for defenders with 72 career assists and places second with 81 points.

The Stillwater, Minn. native has not missed one game in his career, appearing in all 153 contests since arriving on campus. His streak is the longest in school history and currently the 14th-longest in NCAA history.

Danford is the third Griff defenseman to earn all-conference honors since the program moved to the Division I level in 1998. He joins Derek Gilham, who collected first-team accolades in 1998-99, and Carl Hudson, who was named to the third team in 2008-09 and the second team in 2009-10.

A member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Tournament Team a year ago after helping lead Canisius to its first conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, Danford and the Griffs are set to continue the defense of their title in the league’s quarterfinals against second-seeded Bentley. Canisius and the Falcons open the best 2-of-3 series on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
