A last-second goal in the first half was the only tally in Saint Peter’s 1-0 victory against the Canisius College men’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Griffs to 6-7-2 and 2-3-1 in MAAC play, while the Peacocks improve to 3-7-4 and 1-3-2 against conference foes.

“The windy conditions made it a tough environment today to play in,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “We were against the wind in the first half and I thought we defended very well but were unfortunate to give up a goal in the dying seconds. In the second half, we had the better chances but failed to convert them and that was the difference in the game.”

Saint Peter’s scored the game’s only goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the first half. After Canisius netminder Ryan Arvin posted a save, Nick Sifrin knocked in the rebound for the 1-0 lead after 45 minutes of action.

The Griffs dominated the second stanza – outshooting the Peacocks, 8-1 – but were unable to find the equalizer in the final 45 minutes of play. Junior Asani Samuels hit the post in the 57th minute and Canisius also had a goal called back after a throw-in deflected off the goaltender and into the back of the net only to see the referee call a foul.

Canisius finished the game with an 11-8 advantage in shots, while Saint Peter’s had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Both Arvin and the Peacocks’ David Giddings recorded three saves in net.

The Griffs continue MAAC play on Wednesday with a contest against Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara. Kick off at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.
