The Canisius volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a four-set loss to Eastern Michigan and a three-set loss to NC State on the first day of the Golden Griffin Invitational at the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 26-24, 25-27, 25-22, 25-19 to Eastern Michigan and then lost 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 to NC State.

“I was really proud of the way we battled today against two quality opponents,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We are learning the importance of how just a couple of passes in each set can really influence the outcome of the match.”

Eastern Michigan 3, Canisius 1

The Griffs led for the majority of the first set, going up 12-7 after a kill from freshman Katlyn Tyler. The Eagles chipped away at the lead and got within two at 18-16, but the Griffs opened up a 22-17 lead after a block from senior Roxanne Hernandez and sophomore Rachel Kline. The Eagles would use a 7-1 run to take their first lead of the match at 24-23. Canisius staved off the first set point on a kill from Kline, but Eastern Michigan won the last two points to take the opening set.

Canisius also led for the majority of the second set, going up 19-12 after an error by Eastern Michigan. The Eagles would use a six-point run later in the set to go up 24-21, but Canisius didn’t go away quietly. The Griffs fought off three set points, including back-to-back kills from Tyler, and went up 25-24. After Eastern Michigan knotted the score at 25-25, another kill from Tyler and an error by the Eagles evened the match at one set apiece.

Eastern Michigan went up 16-12 in the third set, and the Griffs chipped away at the lead but could never get closer than one point at 20-19. The Eagles re-established control with three straight points and went on to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Eagles took control of the fourth set with a six-point run to go up 15-9 and eventually led 23-14. The late five-point rally by the Griffs made it 23-19, but Eastern Michigan won the last two points to close out the match.

Tyler led the Griffs with 15 kills and also had 14 digs. Junior Emily Litwin posted a career-high 33 digs while both setters — senior Sydney Palka (20 assists and 11 digs) and sophomore Grace Streicher (20 asssists and 13 digs) had double-doubles. Senior Emily Elek ahd 10 kills and four blocks while Hernandez also had four blocks.

NC State 3, Canisius 0

The Wolfpack scored six straight points midway through the first set to build a 15-9 lead and went on to take the first set easily. NC State jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the second set but Canisius made it 13-12 after a kill from sophomore Lauren Siebert. The Griffs could never even the score, as NC State closed the set on a 4-1 run to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, the Griffs held an early 8-6 lead after a kill from Tyler, but NC State scored five straight points to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The Griffs evened the score at 18-18 after an attack error by the Wolfpack, but NC State would go on to win seven of the final 10 points to sweep the match.

Canisius returns to the court for two matches on Saturday. The Golden Griffins host Hartford at noon and Cleveland State at 6 p.m.

Notes: The Griffs had three players with a double-double for the first time since Sept. 25, 2008, against UMKC… Canisius and NC State met for the second time while Canisius and Eastern Michigan played for the third time… The 15 kills by Tyler are the most by a Golden Griffin freshman in a season opener in the last 12 seasons... Sophomore Jordan Tylec had three service aces against Eastern Michigan after posting four during her freshman season.
