Junior forward Asani Samuels and freshman defender Thomas Teupen of the Canisius College men’s soccer team were both honored on Thursday night at the MAAC annual postseason banquet. Samuels was named to the All-MAAC Second Team, while Teupen collected MAAC All-Rookie Team accolades.

Samuels matched a career high with eight points as a junior, stretching the opponent’s defense as the team’s lead forward. A native of Jamaica, Samuels recorded three goals in 2013 to go along with two assists. He also became just the second Griff in the program’s history to net two overtime goals in the same season, leading Canisius to wins against Bucknell and Siena.

During his career, Samuels has totaled 19 points, eight goals and three assists in 54 career games. As a sophomore, Samuels was also named to the NSCAA All-North Atlantic Third Team.

In his first season at Canisius, Teupen helped anchor the Canisius defense from the center back position. He scored one goal in 18 games, while helping the team register four shutouts during the campaign.

In addition, three Griffs were honored for their work off the field when seniors Ryan Arvin and Zack Schwartz and junior Ryan Schroen were selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team.

The Griffs finished the 2013 campaign with a 7-9-2 overall record, placing sixth in the MAAC with 10 points during conference play. Canisius’ 15 wins in the last two seasons are tied for the most in any two-year span in the program’s history.
