Visiting Iona College picked up two more MAAC wins to improve to 10-14 overall and 4-0 in conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Canisius Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The Gaels came back to win the first game by the score of 10-8 before closing out the Golden Griffins 16-6 in five innings. Canisius is now 7-19 overall and 0-2 in league games.

In the first game, Canisius trailed Iona 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Griffs scored three times in the frame to take a 7-6 lead. In that inning, back-to-back singles from Michelle DelPrince and Valorie Nappo put runners at first and second with one out, and both players moved up on a wild pitch. Sophomore Bethany DeMarco followed Nappo by drawing a one-out walk, and freshman Samantha Sharkey drove in a run when she earned a bases-loaded walk to make the score 6-5 in favor of the Gaels. Canisius took its first lead of the game when freshman Jessica Berzins ripped a base hit back up the middle that allowed Sharkey and DeMarco to score. That lead was short-lived however, as Iona freshman Kristen Turner hit her third grand slam of the season with two down in the sixth make the score 10-7 in favor of the Gaels. The Griffs got a run back in the home half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by DelPrince, but that was as close as the Blue and Gold would get for the remainder of the contest.

Iona junior Carly Argyle earned the win in the circle for the Gaels after she went the distance and allowed eight runs, all earned, on 10 hits to go with five strikeouts and seven walks. Canisius senior pitcher Jen Consaul took the loss for the Blue and Gold to see her record fall to 6-10 on the season. Consaul posted her 13th complete-game of the season and she allowed 10 runs on 14 hits while striking out four and walking two. DelPrince went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored in the losing effort for Canisius, while Berzins went 2-for-3 with two runs driven in. Senior Robin Kennery and freshman Lindsey Silfer also had doubles for the Griffs.

In the nightcap, Iona jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning and added seven runs in the second en route to the 16-6 victory in five innings. Allison Hand and Eileen McCann each had home runs for Iona, which entered the game ranked first in the MAAC in team batting average. Sophomore Jordan Courage earned her second win of the season in the circle for Iona after she allowed four runs on three hits while walking two in 3.1 innings. Canisius sophomore Jenn Solis took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year after she gave up seven runs, six earned, on eight hits to go with two strikeouts and three walks.

Kennery went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the game two loss for Canisius. One of those two hits was her sixth double of the season. Sophomore Meghan Cuda had a hit in the loss and junior Kalie Michalski picked up her first career hit with a single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Griffs will close out their weekend homestand on Monday when the team hosts Fairfield. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. The games were originally scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon, but were postponed because of weather issues.
