The Canisius College men’s soccer team released its 2014 schedule on Thursday, highlighted by 10 home games at the Demske Sports Complex.
The Griffs open the 2014 campaign on the road at the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic, hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. Canisius squares off with Butler on Aug. 29 before meeting UC Davis on Aug. 31 at the tournament. The Griffs are set to play both schools for the first time in program history.
Canisius then returns home and plays five of its final six non-conference games at the Demske Sports Complex. The home opener is set for Sept. 5 against Bucknell, while the Griffs also host Bryant (Sept. 7) plus local rivals Buffalo (Sept. 14) and St. Bonaventure (Sept. 26) before wrapping up the non-conference slate with a home game against St. Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 28. In addition, the Griffs play at Robert Morris on Sept. 21 in non-league action.
The Griffs begin their quest for a MAAC Championship on Sept. 30 with a road contest against defending regular-season champions Monmouth. Last season, Canisius was the only school to defeat the Hawks during the 2013 regular season.
Canisius will also host Quinnipiac (Oct. 5), Rider (Oct. 8), Fairfield (Oct. 18), Marist (Oct. 22) and Saint Peter’s (Nov. 1) in MAAC action, while playing at Iona (Oct. 11), Siena (Oct. 15), Manhattan (Oct. 25) and Niagara (Nov. 5).
The top six teams in the regular-season standings qualify for the 2014 MAAC Tournament. Four teams will play a quarterfinal on Nov. 8 at the two highest-seeded participating teams. The four remaining schools will then square off on Nov. 14 and Nov. 16 on the campus of the top seed to determine the conference’s champion.
The Griffs, who return 14 letterwinners and seven starters from a season ago, have won 15 games in the past two seasons, which is tied for the most in any two-year span in the program’s history.
