The Canisius softball team split a fall doubleheader at Buffalo on Sunday, taking game one by a score of 2-1 before dropping the nightcap 6-5 in eight innings. The Golden Griffins are now 4-1 in the fall.

In the game one victory, senior pitcher Jen Consaul threw a complete-game four-hitter where she allowed just one run, which was unearned. Sophomores Bethany DeMarco, Tori Nappo and Alexis Roman all had hits in the win, with DeMarco driving in the game-winning run in the third inning with a base hit. Junior Robin Kennery drove in the Griffs' first run in the bottom of the first that plated freshman Jessica Berzins. Berzins finished the game by going 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.

In the second game, the host Bulls defeated Canisius 6-5 in eight innings. The Blue and Gold trailed 5-3 in the top of the seventh, but knotted the game at 5-5 when freshman Lindsey Silfer drove in two runs with a base hit. Silfer ended the second game by going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and four RBIs. Sophomore Megan Cuda scored two runs in the losing effort, while senior Valorie Nappo went 1-for-3.

UB scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth and an RBI-base hit from Sammi Gallardo. The Bulls started the bottom of the eighth with a runner on second thanks to the international softball tie-breaker rule. After Ashton Earnhardt earned a leadoff walk, Gallardo drove a pitch from Canisius hurler Sarah Andrews into the gap in left-centerfield to knock in the game-winning run.

Andrews started the game for Canisius and took the loss after pitching 5.1 innings. She allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out one. Sophomore Jenn Solis came on in relief of Andrews and allowed four runs on five hits while walking one.

The Griffs will return to action Friday, Oct. 4, when the team plays an Alumni Game at 8 p.m., at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius will close out the fall schedule Oct. 6 when the Blue and Gold hosts Mercyhurst Northeast for a doubleheader at the Demske. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The team's fall game against Monore Community College, scheduled for Oct. 2, has been cancelled.
